Debate – Simiente

Simiente’s 5th grade has focused their work around the resolution of group conflicts and relationships, based on an argument project lead by the teachers. The project was closed with an important group debate, based on different points of view.

The hypothesis was:

“Free time favors the development of interpersonal bonds and therefore academic learning processes”.

Each group had time to analize the statement, investigate and put together the arguments that defend their position (in favor or against).

Each group had 5 minutes to present their arguments while the other took notes in order to prepare their counterarguments. More time was alotted to prepare new arguments based on what the other group stated.

Some “pro” arguments were:

  • Research confirms that free time is favorable for children.
  • Free time favors rest, making friends and solving conflicts.
  • Free time is necessary to be rested and ready to absorb new knowledge.
  • Without free time, we get tired, our head hurts and we get bored.

Some “con” arguments were:

  • Misuse of free time can cause fights and discussions if we don’t know how to use it.
  • As there are no clear rules, it can cause disagreements.
  • Free time means we have less time to learn.
  • According to National Geographic, too much free time is detrimental to health as it causes boredom and tiredness.
  • Those who have difficulties socializing may have a rough time.
